Maryland Injection Molding

At Advanced Plastiform, Inc., we take pride in designing and manufacturing custom plastics for businesses throughout Maryland. We are a full-service plastics company, using both thermoforming and injection molding to provide high-quality, durable plastic products, components, and parts used in furniture, vehicles, telecommunications, and materials handling, just to name a few.

Since 1988, our number one priority has been to provide the best possible service to our clients. This means we go above and beyond just the manufacturing process. We work with you to determine the best method of manufacturing, discussing design and prototyping, and ensuring accurate, consistent, high-quality products, all while meeting your budget and deadline expectations.

Our Injection Molding Process

Injection molding is a method of plastics engineering and manufacturing where we heat a thermoplastic material is melted and added to a machine that injects the liquid into a custom, double-sided tool designed by our experienced team. Once the plastic cools, it’s ejected from the mold and any finishing touches are added, like paint, silk-screening, or special coatings.

We invest in the newest processes and equipment for injection molding. Our injection presses range from 100 to 530 tons, allowing us to create all types of components and parts, including complex designs that require varying thickness, intricate detailing, and other customizations. Plus, we have a variety of plastics to choose from to best meet your needs and can even include additives for UV protection, anti-static coatings, and other more specific customization.

Choosing Injection Molding Over Thermoforming

Thermoforming is more widely used in plastics manufacturing because it is inexpensive and offers a fast lead time. However, it isn’t the best option for every design. Injection molding is often a better option for orders for small pieces, those requiring complex detailing or variable thickness, and especially orders for large quantities or where replenishment or repeat orders are needed.

Why Is Injection Molding More Complicated than Thermoforming?

While thermoforming involves a flat sheet of plastic fitted over a single-sided tool, injection molding requires a double sided tool to mold the plastic. To ensure the liquid thermoplastic is accurate to the design, more force is required to inject the plastic into the mold. This means that the tooling must be made of stronger material, like steel, heavy aluminum, or beryllium-copper alloy.

Because more work goes into the design and prototyping and the materials have a higher cost, the price and lead time for tooling is greater than the cost of tooling in thermoforming. However, once we are ready to begin production, we can produce a high volume in a relatively short period of time. This means that injection molding is generally more cost-efficient for large orders because the price per-unit is low. Also, additional orders for the same product will be less expensive and have a shorter lead time because the hard part will be complete.
